We have loved the 2nd-generation Genesis G70 from the day it hit the market back in 2020. It has been refreshed since then to look better and drive better. For the 2024 model year, it receives what amounts to be the biggest change of all... a new base engine that's anything but base. The old 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder has been replaced by a more powerful 2.5-liter turbo four that showed up in the 2022 Kia Stinger.
The base G70 no longer makes 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The new mill bumps output to an even 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, a substantial increase of 48 horsepower and 51 lb-ft. That amounts to a 19 percent power increase. It's just what the base G70 needed (especially now that it no longer has an available 6-speed manual transmission). Power should prove to be significantly better across the powerband, and turbo boost should be smoother. To say that this will make the driving experience sweeter is an understatement. As a measure, the bigger 3.3T turbo six-cylinder g70 makes 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft.
To match the increased power, the G70 will get Brembo brakes as standard equipment across the line for 2024, a huge benefit that should scrub speed better than the stock brakes. There are some minor changes to the exterior including new paint colors (including the flashy blue you see here). It also gets new two-tone leather choices, USB-C charging ports, touch-sensitive climate controls, and a frameless rearview mirror that should reduce the amount of real estate needed in your line of view. There are also standard rear side-impact airbags and an optional digital phone key that allows you to start the car without the fob.
Of course, we can't wait to drive it because the base engine lightens the front end compared to the six-cylinder 3.3T, meaning it should be more agile. No pricing has been announced, but we're guessing the cost to own a 2024 Genesis G70 2.5T will go up to account for the improvements.
