The BMW X2 has always been a bit of an odd duck and hard to figure out its place in the large Bimmer crossover lineup. It leans toward being sportier than the X1, but it was hard to parse those two out in terms of looks. The new X2 has been redesigned for the 2024 model year, and it edges more toward the look of the fastback X4 and X6 while not being quite as bulky-looking.
The new X2 looks very different from the last model, and that's evident in the front fascia with larger kidney grilles, bigger intakes, and more dramatic headlights. Those headlights have internal LED chevrons that act as both daytime running lights and turn signals. The grille can be had with LED illumination, which is trend these days. The side windows are also quite a bit taller, and the C-pillar is thicker and more steeply raked. You'll even notice the larger rear haunches with accompanying crease that leads to sculpted taillights Rather than being evolutionary, the new X2 looks like a completely different model from the 2023 version.
The X2 also gets smooth sides, as well as details like flush door handles, sculpted wheel arches,and e very dramatic rear valence. The X2 gets standard 19 and 20 inches wheel sizes, or you can upgrade to big 21 inchers for the first time in the model's short history. The taillights get chevron shapes that nicely match the versions up front.
The new styling is also accompanied by a larger footprint. The 2024 X2 gets stretched by a significant 7.6 inches in length, 0.8 inches in width, and 2.5 inches in height. To further distinguish it from its X1 sibling, the X2's wheelbase is now 0.9 inches longer than the outgoing model and 2.6 inches longer than the X1. The new X2 is also quite a bit heavier, to the tune of about 300 pounds.
Those increased dimensions certainly make a difference for occupants. There's more elbow and shoulder room in the first row, and there's an inch more legroom for the second-row passengers. The cargo hold accommodates 25.3 cubic feet of stuff, and 51.7 cubic feet with the seats folded flat. The outgoing X2 had 21.6 and 50.1, respectively.
The X2 benefits from BMW's excellent curved display and iDrive 9, one of the best infotainment systems around. The bad part is that the X2 eschews much of the physical switchgear we love so much. There's a linear dashboard, plenty of metal trim, and that big wireless phone charger front and center like the X1's The center console, thankfully, gets physical controls like a new gear selector and buttons and switches for the ignition, electronic parking brake, audio.
The upholstery on the seats is actually what's known as Veganza animal-free material as standard equipment. They come in Black, Mocha, or Oyster, and two-tone Red/Black or Atlas Grey/Smoke White. Even the M Sport package isn't real leather but a combination of the aforementioned Veganza and Alcantara suede sport seats in black with blue contrast stitching.
You can choose between two trims, the xDrive28i or the sportier and more powerful M35i xDrive. The xDrive28i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that's good for 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque. It will hit 60 mph in 6.2 seconds The M35 xDrive gets 309 horses and the same torque as the less powerful model. It will sprint to 60 in 5.2 seconds and sound better all the while with the M exhaust. There's also a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a limited-slip differential to all four wheels. Upgrades from the last model better steering componentry, improved handling, and an an Adaptive M Sport suspension that's standard on the M235i and optional on the xDrive28i.
Look for the new X2 to hit showroom in the spring of 2024. Pricing has been disclosed at $42,995 for the xDrive28i including destination, and $52,395 for the M35i xDrive. We'll provide more details on the new X2 when we get a chance to drive it next year.
